GitLab, an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps used by millions of developers and organizations worldwide, is currently seeking a Staff Engineer, People Technology. This position acts as the technical anchor for the People Technology group, focusing on designing, creating, and maintaining automated systems, software agents, and integrations that connect internal platforms such as Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, Google Cloud, Claude, and Workato. Candidates suited for this role approach people systems with a software engineering mindset, prioritizing clean code, observability, scalability, and robust automation.
In this capacity, the engineer operates within an AI-first framework, using large language models and modern development practices to eliminate manual tasks and support global team operations. Team members at GitLab are expected to integrate artificial intelligence into their daily workflows to enhance productivity. The People Technology group builds the foundational architecture enabling the company to scale as an all-remote enterprise while partnering closely with security, IT, and AI engineering teams.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain integrations and automations connecting Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, and internal applications.
- Write, test, and manage automation code using Ruby or similar scripting languages within GitLab.
- Develop and maintain Slack applications and bots to reduce workflow friction for global employees.
- Maintain CI/CD deployment pipelines for people system integrations to ensure safe updates.
- Utilize AI tools, large language models, and Model Context Protocol frameworks to accelerate development cycles.
- Partner with InfoSec, IT, and AI Engineering teams to establish robust maintenance and documentation standards.
Requirements
- Experience writing and maintaining code in Ruby or comparable scripting languages like Python or PHP.
- Expertise in enterprise automation and integration platforms such as Workato.
- Background in building integrations via Workday Web Services.
- Experience developing Slack applications using Slack APIs and Bot SDK.
- Proficiency with Git and GitLab for version control, code review, and continuous integration workflows.
- Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform or AWS, along with Docker and Kubernetes experience.
Qualifications
- Experience connecting human resources software including Workday and Greenhouse.
- Familiarity with Google Kubernetes Engine.
- Understanding of HR data flows and human resources system architectures.
