Job Description
Grafana Labs creates open-source-based observability platforms that help thousands of organizations manage reliability, handle incidents, and process data at scale. The organization is fully distributed with personnel spanning over forty countries and offers a collaborative, trust-based environment. The Application Core Services team within the Foundations department develops and maintains the systems powering customer experience and business operations. Within this group, the Usage squad focuses on rates, billing, consumption tracking, and marketplace integrations.
The organization seeks a hands-on Staff Software Engineer to join the Usage squad. This position concentrates primarily on backend systems and architecture while collaborating across the entire stack. Team members handle application code, data stores, deployment configs, and associated cloud infrastructure. Candidates located in NASA’s Eastern Time zone are preferred to facilitate overlap with EMEA colleagues.
This role suits an experienced engineer who enjoys solving complex operational problems, improving billing reliability, and automating manual workflows. The selected individual will guide technical delivery, contribute directly to implementation, and take ownership of system health from initial scoping through production support.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate backend APIs and services handling billing, usage calculations, and marketplace workflows
- Write backend code primarily using Go alongside Node.js, while contributing to TypeScript and React applications
- Improve the precision and dependability of usage and billing processes through robust validation and recovery mechanisms
- Replace recurring manual tasks with maintainable automation and clear operational controls
- Manage and evolve cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes workloads, scheduled jobs, and deployment configs via infrastructure as code
- Troubleshoot production incidents involving application code, databases, resource bottlenecks, and replication delays
- Plan and execute deployments, database migrations, and infrastructure updates with proper monitoring and recovery strategies
- Build and maintain integrations with cloud marketplaces and external business systems
- Collaborate with product management, Support, DealOps, and infrastructure teams to clarify requirements and resolve dependencies
- Participate in the squad on-call rotation following onboarding and improve alerting, dashboards, and runbooks
Requirements
- Substantial professional background designing and operating production backend systems
- Strong expertise building and operating backend systems in Go
- Professional experience contributing to frontend applications using TypeScript and React or comparable technologies
- Practical knowledge of distributed systems concepts such as retries, partial failures, and data consistency
- Experience with relational databases including data modeling, migrations, and query performance tuning
- Hands-on experience deploying and troubleshooting containerized services in Kubernetes
- Familiarity managing cloud infrastructure through code and utilizing CI/CD delivery pipelines
- Ability to investigate production issues using logs, metrics, and traces to create lasting improvements
- Track record of delivering complete software projects independently from requirements gathering to post-release support
- Experience with remote collaboration and asynchronous communication across multiple time zones
- Willingness to participate in on-call rotations and assume responsibility for system production behavior
Qualifications
- Experience with usage metering, billing engines, pricing models, and financial reconciliation systems
- Familiarity with auditability, traceability, or financial-control system requirements
- Knowledge of MySQL operations, replication, database upgrades, and performance tuning
- Experience with Terraform, Jsonnet, and Kubernetes deployment configuration
- Familiarity with Argo Workflows or comparable orchestration tools
- Cloud infrastructure experience involving managed databases, object storage, and access controls on GCP
- Experience building data synchronization pipelines and BigQuery integrations
- Familiarity with cloud marketplace integrations across AWS, Azure, or GCP
