The company is seeking a Staff Industrial Designer for a temporary, 12-month contract engagement.
This role suits an experienced industrial design professional who enjoys tackling intricate, open-ended problems and working across multiple product initiatives. In this capacity, the selected individual will apply advanced design skills to shape physical hardware that enters customers' households and everyday routines. Responsibilities include building scalable design systems, driving creative direction for major projects, and collaborating closely with engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing teams to transition concepts into production.
The position requires deep technical fluency across sketching, CAD surfacing, prototyping, and color, materials, and finish. Candidates must also demonstrate familiarity with consumer product safety and compliance regulations. The contractor will work independently within a remote environment alongside a compact design team, with occasional travel required as necessary.
Responsibilities
- Apply expert-level creative skills in sketching, computer-aided design surfacing, color, materials, finish, and physical prototyping.
- Contribute to and scale design systems and frameworks to maintain consistency across a growing project portfolio.
- Resolve complex and ambiguous design challenges across multiple concurrent initiatives.
- Anticipate design roadblocks early and propose innovative, scalable solutions.
- Establish the creative direction for major programs and make independent decisions that influence team output and brand standards.
- Collaborate with engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing teams from the initial concept phase through production handoff.
- Monitor tolerances, material specifications, and vendor capabilities to preserve design intent during manufacturing.
- Integrate relevant health and consumer product safety and compliance requirements into the design process early.
- Mentor peers and help improve collaboration and craft standards across the design team.
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of industrial design experience with physical consumer or health and medical hardware that has shipped at scale.
- Portfolio demonstrating expert craft across multiple creative disciplines from initial sketches to manufactured products, with a portfolio link included in the application.
- Experience building design systems, color, materials, and finish standards, or frameworks that scale across projects.
- Demonstrated capability in solving complex and ambiguous design problems across multiple initiatives.
- Proficiency in industrial design tools including sketching, 3D computer-aided design software such as Rhino, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360, and rendering programs like KeyShot.
- Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes including injection molding, overmolding, extrusion, sheet metal, and soft goods, alongside design for manufacturability principles.
- Experience partnering directly with engineering and operations teams to guide products from concept to production.
- Ability to work independently as a remote contractor within a small design team, including periodic travel when needed.
