Job Description

Twilio is a communications company whose products reach businesses numbering in the hundreds of thousands and developers in the millions. The company works remote-first. This staff-level machine learning role sits on the Conversation Memory team, which is building the AI and machine learning layer that lets applications, human agents and AI agents identify a customer, review that person's history and pick the best channel for outreach.

The engineer drives fast research cycles on contextual intelligence and large-scale machine learning. Typical work includes shaping a vague idea into a rigorous experiment that can be completed within weeks, studying large language model orchestration, retrieval methods and data-driven personalisation, and building machine learning systems that cope with heavy traffic. The role expects quick adoption of new skills and modern AI development frameworks, so the team spends its energy on differentiating features rather than routine plumbing.

The posting calls for more than eight years of applied machine learning or AI work and a history of owning ambitious systems from start to finish. Candidates should be proficient in Python, have built cloud platforms on AWS, GCP or Azure that handle large data flows, streaming or real-time predictions, and understand statistical learning, transformer architectures and LLMs in depth. Raising a team's standards through mentoring and design reviews, without formal authority, is part of the job. The role is remote and based in India, across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Maharashtra and New Delhi.

Responsibilities

  • Extend a fast-moving product that is being adopted quickly
  • Turn early ideas into rigorous experiments completed within weeks
  • Investigate LLM orchestration, retrieval methods and personalisation approaches
  • Build machine learning systems that perform at very large scale
  • Pick up new technical skills in a high-delivery environment
  • Adopt current AI development stacks to avoid reinventing routine components

Requirements

  • At least eight years of applied machine learning or AI experience, owning systems end to end
  • Comfort building in ambiguous, 0-to-1 settings
  • Proficiency in Python
  • Hands-on work with cloud platforms on AWS, GCP or Azure for high-volume data and real-time predictions
  • Solid grasp of statistical learning, transformer models and LLMs
  • Ability to lift a team's technical standard through mentoring and design review
  • Strong communication and teamwork

Qualifications

  • Experience building autonomous agents that hold multi-turn conversations with consistent long-term context
  • Background in predicting user behaviour, including experiment design and causal methods when randomisation is partial
  • Experience in a team spread across several countries

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Competitive pay
  • Generous time off, parental leave and wellness leave
  • Healthcare and a retirement savings programme
  • Benefit offerings vary by location
