Job Description
Samsara is a pioneer of the Connected Operations Cloud, delivering a platform that leverages Internet of Things data to help physical industries like construction, manufacturing, and transportation improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability. The company builds a wide array of connected products, including wireless sensors, Linux-based IoT gateways, and internet-connected dashcams.
As a Staff or Senior Firmware Engineer, you will develop software that powers millions of devices deployed globally by industrial and enterprise customers. This role involves participating in hardware selection, bringing up new prototypes from raw silicon, designing core management layers, and optimizing energy consumption for battery-powered hardware. You will collaborate closely with electrical, product, full-stack, mobile, and quality teams to ensure data flows reliably from the device to end users.
The position is ideal for experienced firmware developers with a strong background in resource-constrained systems, low-level interfaces, and C programming. Candidates should possess a history of taking firmware projects from initial concept through production launch while serving as a technical mentor to peers.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with electrical engineers during design reviews to select systems-on-chip, memory capacity, and sensor combinations
- Perform initial board bring-up and configuration for new hardware prototypes and silicon components
- Develop and maintain peripheral drivers, secure bootloaders, device firmware updates, and core power and connectivity management layers
- Design communication protocols and power management strategies for battery-powered sensors and gateways
- Partner with product, full-stack, mobile, and quality engineering teams to ensure accurate data transmission
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and rigorous design reviews to elevate team performance
Requirements
- At least 8 years of experience building firmware for resource-constrained systems
- Proven track record of leading firmware development for multiple new products from concept to launch
- Substantial experience with bare-metal programming and real-time operating systems such as Zephyr or FreeRTOS
- Hands-on board bring-up experience with unproven hardware and debugging tools like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers
- Fluency in low-level communication interfaces including SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, and ADC
- Strong proficiency in the C programming language with the ability to read linker maps and stack traces
- Experience writing technical design documents, review comments, and post-mortems
Qualifications
- In-depth experience with BLE physical layer orchestration and performance optimization
- Cellular IoT expertise including LTE-M or NB-IoT modem integration, power state management, and carrier certifications
- Experience securing embedded systems using secure boot, firmware signing, and cryptography
- Background in implementing fleet-scale OTA and device firmware updates with A/B partitioning
- Prior factory floor experience involving electronics mass production and quality assurance
Core Skills
Benefits
- Above-market salary paired with an equity offering including an initial RSU grant with no vesting cliff
- Employee-led remote and flexible working arrangements
- Team-based incentive schemes and performance-based variable pay
- Comprehensive health benefits and parental leave plans
- Professional development stipends and access to the Samsara for Good fund
