Job Description

Coinbase is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for its Customer Administration Engineering team within the Enterprise Applications and Architecture organization. This fully remote position offers the opportunity to help build and operate foundational platforms that manage customer data operations securely across the company. The primary product managed by this team is Control Center, an internal system utilized by thousands of specialists across legal, compliance, risk, and customer experience functions. As the platform transitions into an AI-agent-ready operations system, the engineer will act as a technical leader to guide architecture, mentor team members, and drive delivery.

This role suits experienced software professionals who excel at leading ambiguous, complex technical initiatives from conception to production. The environment demands high performance, with the team gathering periodically for in-person working sessions known as surges. Ideal candidates bring a strong background in distributed systems, backend service design, and cloud-native infrastructure, coupled with an interest in agentic AI technologies and secure internal tool development.

Responsibilities

Design and deliver foundational platform capabilities including AI orchestration layers, MCP tool registries, and automated risk-based access.
Guide the transformation of Control Center into a headless, AI-agent-ready platform by implementing MCP procedure constructs and evaluation frameworks.
Partner with product and engineering management to create architectural roadmaps, write technical design documents, and lead design reviews.
Build and maintain secure, highly reliable distributed backend services while managing incident response, observability, and SLO definitions.
Collaborate across multiple engineering teams to provide shared platform primitives and eliminate redundant infrastructure.

Requirements

Minimum of eight years of hands-on software engineering experience delivering large-scale, high-traffic distributed production systems.
Extensive background in scalable microservices, backend service design, and API development using gRPC, MCP, or GraphQL.
Demonstrated ability to independently steer complex, multi-team technical projects from planning through production.
Strong proficiency with cloud-native infrastructure and tools including AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD systems, and event-driven architectures.
Experience building secure internal tools or platforms within regulated financial services, maintaining strict attention to data governance and access management.
Familiarity with agentic AI systems such as MCP servers, LLM orchestration layers, and RAG pipelines.
Primary fluency in Go with a willingness to work in Python when necessary for the AI stack.
