Job Description
Coinbase seeks a remote Staff Software Engineer to join the Enterprise Applications and Architecture Customer Experience sub-organization. The company operates as a remote-first enterprise that brings personnel together periodically for in-person working sessions known as surges. In this capacity, the professional will act as a technical anchor supporting eight globally distributed engineering squads, guiding developer experience initiatives, and defining strategies for artificial intelligence tooling. The team builds Tier-1 platforms and internal tools utilized by approximately seven thousand specialists across legal, compliance, customer experience, global investigations, and trust and risk functions.
This position fits an experienced backend practitioner who can independently steer complex technical projects from initial concept through production deployment across multiple teams. The role demands someone capable of designing robust distributed services, overseeing system reliability, and establishing rigorous engineering standards within a regulated operational environment. Selected individuals will collaborate closely with engineering managers and leadership to drive platform excellence, mentor technical growth, and shape architectural direction.

Responsibilities
- Shape the artificial intelligence maturity and developer experience roadmap alongside engineering leaders
- Lead platform reliability, observability, and operational readiness initiatives for Tier-1 systems
- Establish build-versus-buy strategies for tooling and infrastructure across the sub-organization
- Provide architectural guidance and delivery oversight across multiple globally distributed engineering squads
- Design and maintain secure, reliable distributed backend services with complete service-level objective ownership
Requirements
- Possess at least eight years of software engineering experience focusing on large-scale distributed systems
- Demonstrate a history of leading ambiguous technical initiatives from design to production across multiple teams
- Bring strong familiarity with cloud-native infrastructure including Kubernetes, AWS, Terraform, and event-driven architectures
- Show experience building secure internal platforms adhering to compliance and data governance standards
- Have background working with agentic artificial intelligence systems or orchestration layers, alongside proficiency in Go and willingness to write Python
