Job Description
Gusto provides tools such as payroll, 401(k) management, health insurance, and HR services to support over 500,000 small businesses nationwide. The company is currently hiring a Staff Software Engineer for its Expansion Experiences group. This team focuses on helping small business owners discover and adopt additional Gusto offerings, including plan upgrades, health insurance, and feature adoption. In this role, you will guide features and experiments across the entire product lifecycle, from initial concepts through release and continuous iteration. The position suits an experienced full-stack engineer who enjoys combining technical execution with customer-experience judgment. You will write frontend code, create backend APIs, and ensure that technical ideas genuinely improve customer behavior rather than just meeting specifications. Please note that travel to a company office for onboarding is required for this position.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test customer-facing features across booking flows, recommendations, nurture campaigns, and plan upgrades
- Run structured A/B tests and phased rollouts to measure changes in adoption, conversion, and retention
- Develop backend data models and APIs to support personalization and multi-step customer journeys
- Mentor other engineers to elevate technical execution and promote responsible AI usage
- Collaborate with Product Management, Design, Data, and Platform Engineering teams to prototype and launch solutions
Requirements
- Have 8 or more years of software development experience
- Possess experience building scalable solutions in growth, lifecycle, or conversion-focused contexts
- Demonstrate ownership of multi-quarter projects solving complex engineering challenges at scale
- Show comfort with designing and interpreting experiments under ambiguous requirements
- Engage actively with AI tools and build fluency as the technology evolves
Qualifications
- Experience or interest in working with Ruby on Rails, React, GraphQL, and TypeScript
- Background in large-scale refactors and resolving performance and reliability issues
