Job Description
Gusto is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the Gusto Pro Integrations team. The team builds and maintains integrations linking Gusto to outside software that accounting firms use. It already runs a set of integrations, including bookkeeping integrations, and expects that portfolio to keep growing. The role is remote.
The engineer owns existing integrations and helps create new ones. Backend services built with Ruby on Rails and Sidekiq keep data synchronized between Gusto and partner platforms. The work also includes evaluating traditional API approaches alongside newer AI agent protocols such as MCP, helping set the technical direction for the Integrations area, and working with product managers, designers and data scientists to confirm that each integration fits how accountants work. Code review, mentoring engineers and raising the team's engineering standards are part of the job. The roadmap is not fully defined yet, so the engineer will have a real say in what gets built next.
The posting asks for a minimum of eight years working as a professional software developer, including experience owning multi-quarter projects from scoping through launch. Deep familiarity with service design, APIs, partner integrations, data flows and observability is expected, along with comfort with ambiguity in an early-stage area. Ruby on Rails experience is strongly preferred. OAuth, third-party API work and familiarity with MCP or agentic integration patterns are listed as plus points. Clear communication is required, so the engineer can explain tradeoffs to other engineers and to non-engineering partners. The posting also describes an AI-native way of working that includes AI tools in daily coding, review and debugging.
The cash compensation target is 163,000 to 204,000 USD per year for Denver, and 197,000 to 247,000 USD per year for San Francisco, Seattle and New York. Stock equity is offered in addition. Final offers depend on experience and other factors.
