Job Description

GitLab is an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps used by millions of registered users and over half of the Fortune 100. The organization is seeking a Staff Software Engineer with a focus on NLP and backend systems to join its remote team in India on a full-time basis. In this position, you will act as a technical leader guiding cross-functional initiatives, modernizing legacy systems and monoliths into modular architectures, and establishing engineering standards across multiple product groups.

This role suits an experienced engineer who excels at driving technical direction through clear written communication and peer influence rather than formal authority. You will lead the adoption of AI-assisted and agentic workflows, define necessary operational and security guardrails, and solve complex scaling problems. GitLab operates as a remote-first, asynchronous workplace valuing continuous knowledge exchange and high performance. While salary details are not provided in the posting, the company offers a comprehensive range of benefits including equity compensation, flexible paid time off, parental leave, and professional development support.

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical design and execution for broad backend initiatives spanning multiple teams
  • Drive modular backend, service, data, and platform architecture strategies
  • Define and improve engineering standards covering APIs, compatibility, testing, security, performance, and observability
  • Establish shared patterns for dependency management, data ownership, eventing, and failure isolation
  • Participate in on-call rotations and incident response for owned systems
  • Mentor senior and intermediate engineers while fostering reusable patterns and technical debt reduction
  • Guide team-level adoption of AI-assisted and agentic engineering workflows alongside proper guardrails

Requirements

  • Demonstrated technical leadership experience across multiple teams or a broad product area
  • Deep backend architecture and production background working on complex applications, services, or platforms
  • Practical experience modernizing legacy backends or monolithic architectures in production environments
  • Strong ability to drive alignment through written proposals and decision records without formal authority
  • Capability to balance customer requirements, delivery speed, technical health, and long-term platform investments
  • Background in mentoring engineers and shaping standards via code review and documentation

Qualifications

  • Experience working with Go services and APIs at scale
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud-native operational practices
  • Background in Rust adoption or production ownership for systems and security components
  • Experience with Ruby and Rails modularization or large monolith modernization
  • Knowledge of PostgreSQL scaling, data partitioning, queuing systems, and messaging protocols
  • Familiarity with security-sensitive products or software supply chain engineering
  • Exposure to SaaS, single-tenant, self-managed, or air-gapped deployment constraints
  • Production experience with AI-assisted or agentic engineering workflows

Core Skills
