Job Description
GitLab operates an intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, helping organizations boost developer productivity and reduce security and compliance risks. The company is currently hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Security Foundations to work in India. This role focuses on leading two core areas for GitLab Security: the data layer supporting vulnerability and dependency management capabilities, and the transition toward services outside of the monolithic architecture.
The person in this position will architect and build systems capable of ingesting, storing, indexing, and querying security report data, alongside third-party integrations. Operating primarily with PostgreSQL and scalable backend design, the engineer will support security features across various internal teams. The position requires guiding large deliverables from initial concepts through execution while collaborating with product, design, frontend, and engineering colleagues.
This role suits professionals who want to remain hands-on across both the Ruby on Rails application and newer services, including greenfield projects. Candidates will help the team establish expertise in modular service design, apply security principles to identify and handle vulnerable software packages, and leverage artificial intelligence tools to optimize daily workflows.
Responsibilities
- Lead large technical initiatives from problem definition through delivery across multiple months or quarters
- Design and build backend systems for vulnerability and dependency management, handling security report ingestion, storage, indexing, and querying
- Integrate systems with key third-party software
- Develop and improve systems utilizing Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL, while contributing to newer services using languages like Go or Rust
- Formulate technical plans, decompose complex work, and assist other engineers in delivering effectively
- Partner directly with product, design, frontend, and engineering teams to make decisions and address constraints
- Drive the product and technical roadmap via hands-on investigation, proposals, and monthly iterative delivery cycles
- Apply a security mindset to system design and evaluate how software packages are identified and managed for vulnerabilities
- Establish patterns for modular services and share technical leadership across GitLab Security
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience leading complex backend projects from conception to delivery while staying hands-on with design and development
- Extensive PostgreSQL experience covering query optimization, table optimization, and write-ahead log management in data-intensive systems
- Strong professional background working with Ruby on Rails or Go, with comfort utilizing Ruby on Rails daily
- Experience shaping delivery plans, directing technical decisions, and mentoring other engineers
- Ability to communicate technical trade-offs clearly and collaborate with multiple partners
- Experience communicating with leadership, guiding peers through complex delivery, and resolving bottlenecks
- Background using security tooling for vulnerability triage and remediation, or professional experience developing security products
- Experience working with large-scale data systems or established software products, or transferable experience from outside security
- Fluency in employing artificial intelligence tools to enhance delivery while applying engineering judgment
Qualifications
- Experience working with large monoliths and an interest in cross-language and cross-service development
