Job Description

Zopa is hiring a Tax Manager for its Financial Control team in London. This is the team's first dedicated tax role, and the holder becomes responsible for all UK tax compliance and reporting at one of the country's quickest-growing digital banks. The manager is the in-house authority on UK tax and offers practical guidance to Finance, Product, Treasury, Legal and other groups, so that tax shapes commercial decisions from the outset.

Responsibilities include preparing and submitting the annual UK Corporation Tax and VAT returns for each Zopa company, drawing on outside advisers where useful, and handling other filings such as CT61 returns and stamp duty reserve tax. The manager runs the R&D tax relief claim with adviser support, is the main contact for HMRC on queries and letters, and helps with the yearly Senior Accounting Officer certification. The post also keeps the group tax risk register current, prepares tax disclosures and provisions for the year-end audit, plans tax matters with advisers, and follows changes to UK tax law. Improving processes through automation, standard procedures and tighter controls is expected, as is sharing tax knowledge across the business. The role is hybrid, with two to three days a week in the London office.

The ideal candidate is an ACA, ACCA or CTA qualified accountant with substantial UK corporate tax compliance experience in banking or financial services, who can work independently and explain complex tax points to non-specialists.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and file the yearly UK Corporation Tax and VAT returns for all Zopa companies, with adviser support where needed.
  • Handle other UK filings, including CT61 returns and stamp duty reserve tax.
  • Run the R&D tax relief claim and act as the go-to contact for Product teams supplying inputs.
  • Serve as HMRC's principal contact for queries, correspondence and compliance matters.
  • Help with the Senior Accounting Officer certification and keep the related controls and policies up to date.
  • Maintain the group tax risk register so that current and emerging risks are logged and addressed.
  • Prepare tax disclosures and provisions for the year-end audit and answer auditor questions.
  • Advise Finance, Product, Treasury and Legal on new products, deals and commercial initiatives.
  • Track UK tax legislation changes and put them into effect where needed.
  • Make tax processes more efficient and better controlled through automation and standard procedures.

Requirements

  • ACA, ACCA or CTA qualified, or hold an equivalent qualification.
  • Substantial experience managing UK corporate tax compliance in financial services or banking.
  • Experience preparing UK Corporation Tax and VAT returns.
  • Good command of UK direct and indirect taxes, including CT, VAT, CT61, SDRT and R&D relief.
  • Experience supporting Senior Accounting Officer duties and tax governance frameworks.
  • Sharp analysis, careful attention to detail and strong Excel skills for large datasets.
  • Experience dealing with HMRC and directing external advisers.
  • Able to work independently and own every part of tax compliance.
  • Good stakeholder skills and the ability to explain tax to non-tax audiences.

Qualifications

  • Experience preparing VAT returns inside an ERP such as SAP.
  • Background in tax process improvement or finance transformation projects.
  • Exposure to transfer pricing or international tax, which is helpful but not essential.
  • Interest in applying technology and AI to tax processes and controls.

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Flexible working, including the option to work from overseas for as many as 120 days a year, subject to the right to work in that country.
