Job Description
Canonical is hiring a full-time Tax Senior Associate who will answer to the CFO. The job spans several corporate entities across a number of countries, with a preference for candidates working in EMEA time zones. The post can be remote within EMEA or office based in London.
The associate's brief is to establish, from nothing, a tax function for a profitable and rapidly expanding software company. That includes designing and running the tax processes that support international growth, and keeping up with tax regimes that keep shifting across markets. The posting highlights digital services taxation and emerging tax technology as areas of interest.
Typical duties include preparing and reviewing corporate income tax, VAT and other returns, managing transfer pricing paperwork alongside outside advisers, and handling enquiries and audits from tax authorities. The associate also runs tax provisioning and IFRS reporting, calculates effective tax rates, prepares disclosures, and supports finance, legal and operations colleagues.
The company puts intellect and strategic thinking ahead of years in the field. The role suits a qualified accountant and tax adviser with a solid academic record and exposure to international tax in a multinational, who finds technology's impact on tax exciting and can explain complicated tax issues to people outside the discipline.
Responsibilities
- Oversee preparing and checking corporate tax, VAT and other returns so they are accurate and punctual
- Work with outside advisers on transfer pricing files and tax planning projects, then carry them out
- Act as the primary contact for tax authority reviews, drafting replies and assembling evidence
- Refine tax workflows, controls and data handling through automation and technology
- Handle IFRS tax provisions and reporting, including effective rates and disclosures
- Give tax guidance to finance, legal and business operations so everyone is aligned
- Track tax law changes in each operating country and judge their effect
Requirements
- Excellent academic record, from school through university
- Bachelor-level education in commerce, finance, economics, technology or a numerate discipline
- Fully qualified as an accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) and as a tax adviser (CTA, ADIT or equivalent)
- Three to five years of relevant tax experience, from a Big 4 or top-10 firm or a multinational's in-house tax department
- Willingness to speak up, offer feedback and voice ideas
- Consistent record of going beyond what is expected
- Professional-level written and spoken English, with polished presentation skills
- Good people skills, curiosity, adaptability and accountability
- Able to make complex tax points clear to non-specialists
- Self-motivated, results-driven and reliable
- Able to attend international company events twice yearly, each lasting up to two weeks
