Job Description

Airalo is recruiting a Senior PHP Engineer to help steer a global platform that the company says serves more than 30 million users. This is a senior backend position in which the engineer designs high-performance distributed systems, pushes the move toward service-oriented architecture, and keeps the platform steady as it expands.

The engineer raises the bar for code quality through design principles, patterns and testing, mentors mid-level developers through detailed reviews, and locates bottlenecks that call for stronger caching or database approaches. Working with product and DevOps colleagues, the engineer turns complicated requirements into a scalable technical plan. The codebase runs on Laravel, although experienced Symfony engineers are encouraged to apply if they can pick up Laravel. Taking part in on-call work is a core expectation. Airalo says rotations are paid through standby fees and overtime, and that new joiners have no on-call duties for their first six months. The role is remote and is open only to candidates who already live in and can legally work in the United Kingdom.

The strongest candidate has seven or more years of professional backend work with deep PHP skills, a record of building enterprise applications, and a habit of using AI tools in everyday development.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design of distributed systems able to absorb traffic from around the world.
  • Build and refine services to raise scalability and efficiency.
  • Guide the shift to service-oriented architecture for modularity and resilience.
  • Establish and enforce standards for code quality, testing and design patterns.
  • Coach mid-level engineers through in-depth reviews and knowledge sharing.
  • Find service bottlenecks and introduce stronger caching and database techniques.
  • Work with product and DevOps to build a scalable technical roadmap.
  • Join the on-call rotation that keeps global services running.

Requirements

  • Seven-plus years of professional backend development with strong PHP expertise.
  • Four-plus years building enterprise applications in Laravel, or an equivalent senior background in Symfony.
  • Experience with distributed systems, event-driven design and messaging such as SQS or Pub/Sub.
  • Proficient with AI tools for technical work: prompting, checking and refining the output.
  • Strong SQL and NoSQL skills, including tuning and transaction handling at scale.
  • Experience designing on AWS and running containerised environments with Docker.
  • Commitment to clean code, automated testing and CI/CD.
  • Fluent English, able to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Already living in and legally eligible to work in the United Kingdom.

Qualifications

  • Experience with SaaS or PaaS, service-oriented architecture or microservices.
  • Knowledge of eSIM or GSMA technologies.
  • Familiarity with travel technology.
  • Experience building or maintaining custom SDKs.

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Paid on-call rotation with standby fees and overtime pay.
  • No on-call duties during the first six months.
  • Guaranteed rest periods and flexible hours after night-time incidents.
  • Rotations split between weekday and weekend duty to limit fatigue.
