Airalo is looking for a hands-on Core Network Lead to direct the build and technical hookup of full MVNO systems worldwide. The lead runs a build team of roughly five engineers and QA specialists under a build-to-run model: the team creates new MVNO capabilities and host operator links from scratch, tests them rigorously, and then transfers stable systems to a separate run team once live.
The lead is accountable for the architecture from the subscriber database (HSS and HLR) through packet core, signalling routing and messaging platforms, and directs fault-finding across the signalling layer, including Diameter and SS7. Service readiness for data, voice and SMS sits with the lead, covering session handling, policy enforcement, VoLTE, legacy circuit-switched voice and international interconnects. The post also involves designing number portability routing to fit each country's rules, meeting lawful interception and emergency call requirements, leading integration and acceptance testing, and running readiness reviews before documented handovers to the around-the-clock run team. The post is remote and full-time.
A suitable candidate has at least five years of practical mobile core work and two or more years leading engineers or QA staff in an agile or delivery-driven setting.
Responsibilities
- Manage about five engineers and QA specialists, covering sprint planning, task assignment and technical reviews across parallel rollouts.
- Define engineering practice, integration templates, the automated test approach and handover standards.
- Guide technical hookup with host mobile operators across signalling, packet core, voice and messaging.
- Design and set up the full MVNO core components, from HSS and HLR through packet core, routing and messaging.
- Lead fault-finding and fixes across the Diameter and SS7 signalling layer.
- Make sure data, voice and SMS are ready end to end, including policy, VoLTE and international interconnects.
- Design and verify number portability routing against each country's framework.
- Take responsibility for each market's lawful interception and emergency routing, including e112, 911 and 999.
- Work with QA on integration, stress and acceptance testing, then run operational readiness reviews and handovers.
Requirements
- At least five years of hands-on experience in mobile core networks.
- At least two years leading engineers or QA specialists in agile or delivery-oriented teams.
- Solid knowledge of packet and voice core, including the subscriber database, policy and charging, VoLTE and circuit-switched voice.
- Command of the signalling stack: Diameter, SS7 and SIP.
- Experience with messaging architecture and SMS routing across operator interconnects.
- A strong delivery focus across several concurrent rollouts, with documentation good enough to hand a system over.
Qualifications
- Automation skills in CI/CD, infrastructure as code (Terraform, Ansible), containers (Docker, Kubernetes) or automated signalling test tools.
- Hands-on work with core MVNO vendors such as Nokia, Ericsson, Mavenir, Oracle Communications, Cisco, Summa Networks, NetNumber or XIUS.
- Cloud-native or virtualised network functions on AWS, Azure, GCP or a private cloud.
- A degree in telecoms, computer science, electrical engineering or a related subject.
