Tailscale is seeking a remote Customer Reliability Engineer to take charge of advanced technical escalations and bridge the gap between client issues and engineering resolutions. This full-time position is suited for a technical professional who enjoys untangling complex, ambiguous networking problems and managing high-stakes customer interactions.
In this capacity, you will report to the Customer Reliability Engineer Team Lead while collaborating closely with the Support, Customer Success, and Product and Engineering departments. Your primary focus will be investigating difficult-to-isolate bugs, communicating with clients during live calls, and preparing comprehensive engineering handoff packages. The position involves identifying systemic patterns in order to create helpful runbooks and product improvements that elevate the support organization's technical standards.
Responsibilities
- Manage high-severity post-sales technical escalations from initial intake to final resolution or engineering handoff
- Conduct deep-dive investigations and attempt to reproduce challenging, poorly understood bugs
- Participate in calls with clients, gather log data, and discuss working hypotheses
- Assemble thorough engineering handoff packages featuring reproducible cases, log evidence, version matrices, and impact scope
- File and monitor bug tickets while ensuring engineering retains full context
- Analyze escalation patterns to identify systemic issues and build runbooks or tooling for the wider support organization
- Coordinate with support, customer success, and product engineering teams within defined operational boundaries
Requirements
- Four or more years of experience in an escalation or technical support function at an infrastructure or SaaS firm
- Hands-on production or homelab networking background covering TCP/IP, DNS, routing, firewalls, NAT, VPNs, and load balancers
- Familiarity with overlay networking technologies like WireGuard, STUN, and UDP hole punching
- Ability to debug code by reading Go source files, analyzing pprof CPU and heap profiles, and understanding goroutines
- Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, containerized applications, Kubernetes debugging, and CI/CD pipelines
- Systems administration capabilities across Linux, Windows, and macOS operating systems
Qualifications
- Experience writing scripts or programs in Go, Python, or JSON
- Background in conducting packet-level analysis
