Job Description
The Director of Developer Platform and Experience is accountable for Motive's in-house developer environment from start to finish. That covers the daily experience engineers have, the underlying infrastructure, build and release pipelines, and the testing frameworks that help several hundred engineers ship quickly without breaking things. The role also oversees the company's AI-driven development lifecycle, covering developer tools, agent cloud infrastructure, evals and the governance around them.
Motive is shifting toward development where software agents plan, write, test, review and help run systems while engineers direct the work. The director turns that shift into a multi-year plan and is measured on whether engineers ship faster, with more confidence and less friction. The posting frames this as a builder's leadership role rather than a strategy-only one.
A central technical challenge is building cloud infrastructure where many agents can work in parallel on real codebases, run tests against live dependencies and open pull requests safely and at sensible cost. The posting asks for sandboxing, least-privilege access, cost controls and fast environment setup, plus an interface for dispatching and reviewing agent output.
Engineering teams are located across North America, Europe and Asia and include a Rails monolith, several Go services, mobile apps and embedded systems. The director leads a multi-team organization of managers and senior engineers, with teams spread across time zones in North America and Asia. The role is full-time and on-site in the United States, with a base range of $229,000 to $285,000 USD.
Responsibilities
- Turn the AI-driven development direction into a multi-year plan that defines how agents and engineers share the work
- Assess, choose and deploy AI coding tools, and create the context layers, MCP servers, evals and guardrails they depend on
- Set up a rigorous evaluation practice for LLMs and agents, with quality and cost tracking
- Build governance with Security, Legal and Platform teams covering acceptable use, code provenance, data handling and audit trails
- Define adoption and impact metrics that show whether agentic development is working
- Build cloud infrastructure for isolated, reproducible agent workspaces with sandboxing, scheduling and cost controls
- Own the developer experience, including local and cloud environments, onboarding and the internal developer platform
- Take responsibility for compilation, continuous integration and delivery pipelines, and shipping systems, driving improvements in DORA and velocity measures
- Set the testing strategy and frameworks, and cut flaky tests
- Hire, develop and lead engineering managers and senior engineers across distributed teams
Requirements
- Twelve or more years in software engineering, six of them leading teams, including two managing managers
- A real developer background with production systems shipped and operated
- Deep experience with CI/CD, build systems, containers, Kubernetes, Terraform, AWS and observability
- Ownership of developer productivity or developer infrastructure at scale, with measurable results
- Hands-on work with modern AI developer tools and a clear view of where agents help and where they do not
- Experience constructing or operating remote development or execution platforms, with security and spending controls
- Practical understanding of benchmarking LLMs and agents on coding tasks
- Strong empathy for developers and a habit of prioritizing based on what they actually experience
- Experience leading distributed teams across time zones
Qualifications
- Experience modernizing a large monolith and working in polyglot environments such as Rails, Go, mobile and embedded
- Work on large-scale testing systems, including reducing flakiness, choosing which tests run, and hermetic environments
- Experience treating internal platforms as products, using roadmaps, adoption tracking and feature-flag launches
- Knowledge of deploying across several regions and of data residency requirements in the US and EU
- Contributions to open source, community engagement or published writing about developer productivity or AI-assisted coding
