As an Engineering Manager for the Build team within GitLab Delivery, you will lead the strategy, execution, and operational excellence of systems that transform source code into secure, verified, and distributable artifacts for Self-Managed and other delivery targets. This position owns build platform foundations to accelerate component delivery and ensure reliable installations for customers. The role requires managing distributed teams remotely and driving complex projects independently without a dedicated technical program manager.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Build team roadmap covering UBT, TUBE, and the broader build platform
- Oversee the delivery of distributable GitLab artifacts including packages, container images, and cloud marketplace images
- Drive a build-once, deploy-everywhere approach across CNG, Omnibus, and future delivery targets
- Manage centralized dependencies and coordinate component updates
- Maintain supply chain security through provenance, SBOMs, vetted dependencies, and compliant build isolation
- Establish self-service onboarding through paved paths, documentation, and standard CI templates
- Enhance build consistency and quality via validation and unified build environments
- Implement observability metrics and dashboards for build pipelines and platform impact
- Collaborate across Delivery and adjacent teams to eliminate onboarding blockers and minimize coordination overhead
Requirements
- Track record of building and owning large-scale distributed services with strong technical depth
- Experience driving operational excellence and maintaining services running at four-nines or 99.99 percent SLOs
- Experience using AI tooling to improve team productivity along with lessons learned from wins and mistakes
- History of establishing and managing high-performing, accountable team cultures including managing out when necessary
- Ability to drive complex projects to completion without relying on a dedicated technical program manager
- Experience leading distributed and remote teams effectively
