Samsara is hiring a Firmware Engineer for a full-time, remote position with an annual base salary ranging from USD 113,645 to 191,000. Samsara operates the Connected Operations Cloud, supplying Internet of Things data solutions to physical operations industries including agriculture, construction, transportation, and manufacturing.
In this role, the Firmware Engineer will develop software running on millions of deployed enterprise and industrial devices, select hardware components, bring up new prototypes, and build foundational management layers. The position requires collaborating with electrical, full-stack, mobile, and quality teams to ensure reliable data transmission.
Ideal candidates have hands-on experience building firmware for resource-constrained systems, strong fluency in C, and a background in bare-metal or real-time operating systems. Additional assets include expertise in low-level communication interfaces and bench testing tools. Employees are eligible for an initial RSU grant without a vesting cliff alongside ongoing performance refresh opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Participate in design reviews with electrical engineers to select systems-on-chip, flash memory, RAM, and sensor combinations
- Bring up new hardware platforms and prototypes from initial power-on, configuring inputs and outputs
- Develop peripheral drivers, secure bootloaders, device firmware updates, and core management layers for power and connectivity
- Design communication protocols and hardware management strategies for battery-powered sensors and gateways to maximize device longevity
- Collaborate with product, full-stack, mobile, and quality engineering teams to ensure data integrity
- Write design documentation, review feedback, and post-mortems
Requirements
- At least 2 years of experience building firmware for resource-constrained systems on products deployed to real customers
- Fluency in C programming, including the ability to read linker maps, stack traces, and corrupted heaps
- Solid bare-metal and real-time operating system experience such as Zephyr or FreeRTOS
- Familiarity with low-level interfaces including SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, and ADC
- Bench testing skills using tools like oscilloscopes and network or RF spectrum analyzers
- Legal authorization to work in the specified work location
Qualifications
- Deep understanding of Bluetooth Low Energy down to the physical layer
- Experience with cellular IoT modem integration including LTE-M, NB-IoT, and certification processes
- Knowledge of end-to-end embedded systems security covering secure boot, firmware signing, and cryptography
- Experience with fleet-scale over-the-air updates featuring A-B partitions and rollback mechanisms
- Background in embedded Linux on gateways using Yocto or Buildroot, kernel drivers, and device trees
- Proficiency with CAN and J1939 protocols on commercial vehicles alongside Python and Bash for scripting and hardware-in-the-loop test automation
