Tide is seeking a hands-on Lead Engineer, Data Platform to join its team in Delhi. Tide provides business accounts, banking services, and connected administrative solutions like invoicing and accounting to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) globally, supporting over two million members across the UK, India, Germany, and France.
In this individual contributor role, you will lead platform initiatives from initial design to production deployment, working closely with the Data Infrastructure Engineering Manager and the wider platform team. The Data Platform Engineering team builds the infrastructure relied upon by backend engineers, data engineers, data scientists, and AI agents, centering on Google Cloud Platform with BigQuery at its core. Your daily responsibilities will include designing and delivering self-service capabilities, enhancing ingestion and transformation capabilities, embedding governance features, establishing service-level objectives, and applying AI-assisted development tools to build and operate the platform more efficiently.
This role suits an experienced engineer with a strong track record of shipping and operating data infrastructure initiatives, solid fundamentals in data engineering, and expertise in Python, SQL, infrastructure as code, and CI/CD pipelines.
Responsibilities
- Design and deliver self-service paths enabling engineers to onboard new sources, datasets, and pipelines without a ticket queue
- Improve data ingestion and transformation capabilities to ensure higher data freshness and reliability while handling complex scenarios like late data, deduplication, and backfills
- Apply data governance practices including residency, PII masking, least-privilege and just-in-time access, retention, erasure, and lineage
- Establish service-level objectives, freshness and quality checks, and actionable alerting for on-call teams
- Identify cost drivers within data platforms and introduce guardrails and attribution for team action
- Break projects into phased shipments with clear milestones, migration paths, and adoption measurements
- Utilize AI-assisted development to build and run the platform faster while preparing governed data for AI agents
- Write clear documentation, provide golden paths, and gather feedback from internal engineering customers
- Review designs and code for fellow engineers to uphold production-grade data and API standards
Requirements
- Experience independently designing, shipping, and operating a meaningful platform or data infrastructure initiative used by internal engineering teams
- Solid data engineering fundamentals including batch and streaming ingestion, change data capture, event-driven patterns, data modelling, and correctness
- Strong production engineering capabilities in Python and SQL for building and operating APIs, pipelines, or shared libraries
- Practical experience with infrastructure as code such as Terraform and CI/CD for data and infrastructure, including environment-level IAM
- Working knowledge of practical data governance including PII masking, access control, data residency, retention, and lineage
- Experience with observability for data pipelines covering freshness, quality checks, SLOs, alert thresholds, and incident response
- Ability to justify technology choices against requirements while maintaining an order-of-magnitude view of cost and capacity
- Hands-on use of AI-assisted development combined with sound engineering judgement
- Clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain trade-offs to various audiences
