Job Description
Dialpad is an AI platform designed for customer experience, uniting voice and digital tools to help organizations resolve customer issues in real time. The company is currently looking for a Lead Product Manager to oversee the product direction for custom small language models, automatic speech recognition stacks, and real-time inference infrastructure. This position focuses heavily on the model lifecycle, spanning data strategy, training, evaluation, release, production monitoring, and eventual model retirement.
This role suits individuals who come from a technical background as an AI researcher, applied scientist, or machine learning engineer, and who want to manage product decisions from the inside. Rather than relying on standard product management toolkits or API orchestration, the person in this position will navigate eval reports, latency budgets, and complex trade-offs involving model quality, GPU costs, and streaming constraints. The successful candidate will write clear direction memos and specs, make release and rollback determinations, and treat internal engineering and go-to-market teams as primary customers.
The role has the opportunity to be based in the employer's Bay Area office located in California. Dialpad is an equal-opportunity employer that fosters an inclusive workplace culture and seeks professionals who are scrappy, curious, optimistic, persistent, and empathetic.
Responsibilities
- Own product direction across the full model lifecycle for custom small language models, automatic speech recognition stacks, and real-time inference infrastructure
- Manage the underlying data strategy including acquisition, consent, usage rights, sampling, and annotation
- Translate ambiguous model-quality questions into concrete decisions, defining performance standards and what ships to production
- Participate in eval reviews, error analyses, and incident retrospectives as a peer
- Make trade-off choices balancing model quality against streaming latency, training approaches, model size, and GPU costs
- Write direction memos, decision documents, and specifications for engineering teams
- Make release and rollback determinations based on defined quality bars and establish the model roadmap and deprecation schedules
Requirements
- A hands-on track record of building, running, training, fine-tuning, serving, or optimizing models in production
- At least two years of product ownership experience, formally titled or not
- Fluency across the model and serving stack, including evaluation design, quantization trade-offs, and inference costs
- Demonstrated judgment under uncertainty and the ability to commit to outcomes
Qualifications
- Speech experience specifically in training or productionizing automatic speech recognition, text-to-speech, telephony, or streaming latency work
- Experience building training data pipelines or managing labeling operations
- Experience running inference infrastructure at scale, handling GPU capacity planning, and optimizing costs
- Experience building or running an evaluation harness in production
- Experience with pricing or packaging artificial intelligence products
- Published works, open-source contributions, or a technical blog
Core Skills
Benefits
- Competitive salary
- Comprehensive benefits and perks
- Real opportunities for professional growth and training programs
- Access to cutting-edge AI tools
