Job Description
Supabase is seeking an experienced performance engineer specializing in benchmarking to join a newly established performance team. As one of the initial members of this group, the successful candidate will work alongside a senior engineer to shape how the platform measures, evaluates, and communicates performance metrics. Supabase functions as a Postgres development platform designed for developers, offering a comprehensive backend suite that includes databases, authentication, storage, edge functions, realtime capabilities, and vector search. In this remote position, the engineer will build and oversee the systems responsible for identifying regressions, explaining changes in speed, and generating reliable benchmarks for customers and the broader market.
This role suits systems professionals who have deep expertise in analyzing distributed environments and want to establish methodologies without any inherited legacy processes. The position involves close collaboration with product, infrastructure, and database engineering groups to create tooling that helps teams independently test and analyze performance data. Candidates will design repeatable workloads, establish regression gates, and build mechanisms that trace issues down to the query level.
Responsibilities
- Design, create, and evolve benchmarking, profiling, and load-testing tooling across cloud, database, and end-to-end environments
- Establish benchmark suites and reference workloads mirroring authentic user behavior
- Set up performance baselines and regression gates across products to track variance and control environments
- Develop systems that convert benchmark data into actionable workflows, including owner routing, triage, and clear reports
- Collaborate directly with database teams such as Multigres and OrioleDB to pinpoint bottlenecks and implement speed improvements
- Enable the organization to publish dependable and repeatable performance figures for the market and client base
- Construct continuous benchmarking infrastructure allowing product teams to detect regressions early through pull requests or local testing
Requirements
- Extensive background in performance engineering, profiling, and benchmarking within complex distributed systems
- Prior experience owning benchmarking architectures where controlling variance and maintaining reproducibility were critical
- Solid systems intuition spanning databases, storage, networking, and cloud infrastructure
- Pragmatic, tooling-focused mindset paired with effective communication skills
Qualifications
- Deep technical knowledge in Linux kernel internals including virtual memory, scheduling, networking, and IO
- Advanced understanding of database internals such as storage engines, query planning, and buffer and WAL management
Core Skills
Benefits
- Fully remote work environment with a WeWork membership or co-working allowance
- Company equity ownership through an ESOP program
- Technology budget provided for setting up an ideal workspace
- Comprehensive health insurance coverage for employees and dependents
- Annual company-wide off-site gatherings in changing cities
- Flexible, asynchronous working hours
- Annual education allowance dedicated to professional development and continuous learning
