Job Description
Supabase is seeking experienced professionals for a Performance Engineer - Performance Analysis & Tuning position. As a fully remote organization hiring globally, Supabase builds a comprehensive Postgres development platform providing database, authentication, storage, edge functions, realtime, and vector search solutions. In this role, you will join a newly formed performance team as an early member, working alongside an established expert to target platform scale and enterprise workloads.
This delivery-focused role involves discovering live production bottlenecks, collaborating with database and infrastructure groups, and creating tooling that translates production metrics into actionable insights. Qualified candidates will analyze complex distributed systems across the entire stack, from database query planning down to the Linux kernel and network layers. Supabase operates asynchronously with a globally distributed team spanning over sixty countries.
Responsibilities
- Locate production system bottlenecks and characterize them for owning teams
- Partner with database groups including Multigres and OrioleDB alongside infrastructure teams to implement performance enhancements
- Develop and evolve performance tooling and methodologies using live production data
- Work with the observability team to establish a unified view of platform latency, throughput, and tail behavior
- Tune kernel paging behavior for production workloads
- Decrease memory overhead inside OrioleDB and Multigres
- Isolate and resolve latency spikes originating from applications through the kernel level
- Identify scalability constraints across the technology stack and collaborate on solutions
Requirements
- Deep experience in performance analysis of complex distributed systems
- Ability to trace issues across the entire stack from query optimizers through system calls to IO schedulers, network paths, and availability zones
- Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure and networking performance such as TCP under load, network virtualization, and AWS primitives
- Demonstrated ability to translate performance insights into architectural product improvements and drive cross-team shipping
- Strong written communication skills for creating precise and reproducible problem characterizations
Qualifications
- Specialized depth in Linux kernel internals including virtual memory, scheduling, networking, and IO
- Specialized depth in database internals including query planning, storage engines, and buffer or WAL management
