Job Description
Supabase acts as a Postgres development platform designed by developers for developers, offering an integrated backend suite that features databases, authentication, storage, edge functions, real-time capabilities, and vector search. The organization is currently looking for a Platform Engineer to join their Compute Capacity team on a remote basis. In this capacity-focused role, you will take ownership of the planning systems that maintain compute supply ahead of demand across all operating regions, managing everything from forecasting and buffer policies to reservation acquisition and fleet reconciliation.
This position is well-suited for engineers experienced in infrastructure, reliability, or platform engineering who enjoy balancing system automation with financial and resource constraints. You will collaborate on mitigating drift, right-sizing workloads, optimizing compute costs per database, and responding to capacity incidents. Working with incomplete assumptions and forecasts, you will help scale infrastructure that supports millions of managed databases.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain the capacity plan to ensure compute supply stays ahead of demand across all regions and instance families
- Model headroom targets and cost tradeoffs to support buffer policy reviews
- Build and maintain automation for reservation acquisition, top-up, fleet reconciliation, and drift detection
- Extend infrastructure as code for provisioning needs
- Instrument capacity by creating metrics for saturation, reservation coverage, idle buffer, forecast error, and provisioning latency
- Tune capacity alerting to detect headroom, quota, and reservation issues months in advance
- Support the demand gate for large customer commitments, migrations, launches, and new regions
- Contribute to right-sizing, instance-family migrations, autoscaling improvements, and workload consolidation
- Drive down compute costs per database through placement, right-sizing, and coverage work
- Participate in capacity incident response and follow-through
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience across infrastructure engineering, SRE, platform, or capacity engineering
- Production software engineering experience owning and operating a service
- Familiarity with modern programming languages such as TypeScript, Python, and Go
- Experience using Infrastructure as Code tools like Pulumi or Terraform
- Experience building or maintaining system observability and trusted alerting using Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, or similar tools
- Working knowledge of AWS EC2 instance families, generations, purchase options, capacity reservations, and quota mechanics
- Financial fluency regarding reservation economics and tradeoffs between coverage, utilization, and cost
Core Skills
Benefits
- Fully remote work setup with a provided WeWork membership or co-working allowance
- ESOP equity ownership in the company
- Tech allowance to set up an ideal work environment
- 100% health insurance coverage for employees and 80% for dependents
- Annual company off-sites in a new city
- Flexible work hours operating asynchronously
- Annual education allowance for professional development
