Job Description
Supabase operates as a backend platform centered around PostgreSQL, offering database management, authentication, storage, edge functions, real-time data handling, and vector search capabilities. The organization functions as a globally distributed, remote-first team with approximately four hundred staff members spanning over sixty countries.
The Postgres Team seeks a Senior Postgres Engineer to support, maintain, and expand the functionality and stability of the managed database offerings. This professional will focus on core database mechanics, extension development, and infrastructure scaling across numerous instances.
This opportunity fits professionals who excel in fast-paced, asynchronous environments and possess a strong interest in creating developer tools that operate at a massive scale. Responsibilities include designing and maintaining PostgreSQL extensions, resolving deployment bottlenecks, and collaborating with cross-functional teams like engineering, product, and customer success to secure the database foundation.
Candidates should demonstrate deep technical knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, experience writing extensions in C and Rust, and familiarity with multi-tenant architectures and database permission models.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain PostgreSQL extensions using C and Rust with a focus on internal mechanics such as WAL, MVCC, parsers, and planners.
- Identify and fix issues within managed PostgreSQL deployments, which includes analyzing core dumps and resolving performance bottlenecks.
- Oversee idempotent deployment pipelines that run across thousands of PostgreSQL instances, including planning test and rollout strategies.
- Handle complex extension ecosystems by managing compatibility, conflict resolution, and upgrade paths.
- Utilize PostgreSQL background worker frameworks, shared memory management, and hook systems to create scalable functionality.
- Partner with engineering, product, support, success, and customer teams to preserve a stable, secure, and performant database foundation.
Requirements
- Demonstrated expertise in PostgreSQL internals covering query planners, execution engines, and storage mechanisms.
- Hands-on background in creating PostgreSQL extensions utilizing both C and Rust languages.
- Solid understanding of PostgreSQL permission systems, roles, and Row Level Security.
- Practical background in troubleshooting production problems within managed PostgreSQL environments, covering performance issues and resource contention.
- Capacity to build, test, and manage idempotent deployments across multiple thousands of running instances.
- Proficiency in reading and navigating the source code of PostgreSQL.
Qualifications
- Prior background working with multi-tenant database architectures.
- Practical experience operating PostgreSQL at scale.
