Job Description

Turing is recruiting a Senior Research Scientist for its STEM research group. The listing marks the position as on-site and gives no city. The post is research-first and centres on questions where a suitable benchmark, dataset or method does not yet exist. The scientist finds gaps in the literature, proposes bold directions, and takes projects from first hypothesis through experiments, benchmark construction and publication.

Four focus areas are named: STEM evaluation at the frontier, synthetic data, reliability and hallucination, and agentic science. Evaluation work includes designing benchmarks across scientific fields and building tests for abilities that fixed benchmarks measure poorly, along with methods for task generation, grading, contamination control and difficulty calibration. Synthetic-data work examines how task choice, difficulty, diversity and filtering influence results, and tests when synthetic material truly helps. Reliability research covers uncertainty, calibration, self-correction, citation and knowing when to abstain. Agentic science studies long-horizon scientific agents and new ways for people and multiple agents to collaborate. Proposals in reasoning, AI for science and other emerging capabilities are also welcome.

The posting asks for a doctorate, or research experience of similar depth, in a demanding technical discipline such as machine learning, computing, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, engineering or statistics. The scientist should frame and carry out original work, understand current large language models thoroughly, design rigorous experiments, and grasp unfamiliar literature rapidly. Strong Python is needed for prototypes and evaluation pipelines, and writing must be clear and exact. A publication record is valued, but the employer cares most about spotting important questions and answering them rigorously and quickly.

Turing says it works with frontier labs, academic researchers and enterprises, and publishes its findings, datasets and benchmarks openly. Compensation is listed as $250,000 to $350,000 on-target earnings plus equity.

Responsibilities

  • Spot gaps in benchmark literature and design STEM benchmarks
  • Develop techniques that produce strong synthetic STEM training material
  • Study hallucination, uncertainty and calibration in technical domains
  • Build workflows and evaluations for long-horizon scientific agents
  • Share results through publications and conference work

Requirements

  • A doctorate, or research experience of similar depth, in a technical field
  • Track record of formulating and running original research
  • Working understanding of current LLMs
  • Rigorous experimental design and quantitative reasoning
  • Strong Python for prototypes and evaluation pipelines
  • Clear technical writing and communication
  • Comfort with a research agenda that evolves quickly

Qualifications

  • A strong publication record, valued but not required
