Job Description

Storyblok, the creator of a headless content management system used by brands like Oatly and Virgin Media O2, is hiring a Senior Database Reliability Engineer I. This fully remote position operates globally with a focus on candidates based in Germany, Austria, and the United Kingdom. The organization centers its culture around flexibility, work-life balance, and an international team environment.

In this role, the successful candidate focuses on the reliability, performance, and financial efficiency of the core PostgreSQL data architecture, which runs primarily on Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL. Rather than engaging in traditional administration tasks, the engineer handles query and index strategies, major version upgrade execution plans, vacuum and bloat management, connection pools, and logical replication. Roughly 60 percent of the work centers on the database platform, while the remaining 40 percent involves infrastructure and automation duties as part of the wider Infrastructure team.

Day-to-day duties include reviewing schema modifications for locking and performance impacts, overseeing end-to-end backup and disaster recovery processes, and modeling capacity and cost. Additionally, the engineer builds Terraform infrastructure and cloud automation on AWS, establishes monitoring and observability measures, and participates in an on-call rotation. Success in the position relies on maintaining stable platform performance, conducting thorough incident root cause analyses, and mentoring other engineers to make sound database choices independently.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the reliability, performance, and scaling of the PostgreSQL and Amazon Aurora data platform
  • Lead zero-downtime version upgrades and large-scale schema migrations while mitigating execution plan regressions
  • Oversee operational platform health including vacuum strategies, bloat prevention, connection pooling with RDS Proxy, and logical replication
  • Review backend schema changes and DDL statements for migration safety and lock behavior guardrails
  • Administer end-to-end backup, restore, and disaster recovery processes alongside compliance auditing controls
  • Model database capacity and cost efficiency across Serverless v2, I/O-Optimized settings, and read replica configurations
  • Deliver infrastructure and automation using Terraform and AWS cloud-native tooling within CI/CD pipelines
  • Create and monitor system observability using Prometheus exporters, Grafana, Datadog, and OpenTelemetry
  • Participate in the on-call rotation, manage incidents, and conduct root cause postmortems
  • Raise the database competency of the broader engineering group through design reviews, documentation, and mentorship

Requirements

  • Seven or more years of experience in database engineering, database reliability, SRE, or infrastructure roles with production PostgreSQL ownership
  • Extensive expertise in PostgreSQL internals, MVCC, EXPLAIN analysis, indexing strategies, vacuum behavior, and tuning
  • Solid background utilizing Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and AWS-managed database offerings
  • Demonstrated ability to perform zero-downtime upgrades and complex migrations on large, busy tables
  • Practical knowledge of physical and logical replication, partitioning, and read scaling
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure-as-Code using Terraform on AWS
  • Strong Linux fundamentals and fluency in at least one scripting language such as Bash, Python, Ruby, or Go
  • Familiarity with production monitoring, security practices including IAM and secrets management, and Git-based CI/CD workflows
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills tailored for a remote-first workplace
  • Readiness to take part in an on-call rotation

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience
  • Familiarity with backend frameworks interacting with PostgreSQL, particularly Ruby on Rails, Python, Rust, or Elixir
  • Experience with caching layers like Redis or Memcached and their impact on database traffic
  • Exposure to analytics pipelines, data warehousing tools such as Snowflake, Redshift, or ClickHouse, and CDC-based data flows
  • Experience with container platforms like ECS, EKS, or Fargate, NoSQL systems, or vector databases
  • AWS certifications such as Database Specialty or DevOps Engineer Professional

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Monthly remote work stipend covering home internet and electricity expenses
  • Home office equipment package provided upon start including a laptop, keyboard, and monitor
  • Home office equipment upgrade fund or local co-working space membership following onboarding
  • Paid sick leave, parental leave, 25 days of annual leave, and local national holidays
  • Personal development fund allocated for courses, books, conferences, and materials
  • Annual international team-building trip alongside monthly and quarterly online get-togethers
  • Flexible schedules centered on work-life balance
