Coinbase is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager, AI Foundations to guide the engineering team responsible for shared artificial intelligence infrastructure. Operating remotely with mandatory quarterly in-person working gatherings known as surges, this full-time position directs technical planning, recruitment, mentoring, task scheduling, and execution across multiple foundational services.
The AI Foundations unit provides centralized components that enable safe, dependable, and economical AI utilization throughout Coinbase. This encompasses the Large Language Model Gateway, model routing mechanisms, Model Context Protocol Gateway for agent tool access, context management, testing utilities, discovery solutions, and expense tracking utilities. These systems support both internal productivity and external product development, preventing redundant work across individual product groups.
This opportunity fits professionals experienced in leading technical groups who can balance swift technological progress with stability, safety, developer satisfaction, and financial efficiency. The manager will direct vendor partnerships, ensure operational readiness, and collaborate with finance, legal, and security divisions regarding artificial intelligence oversight and financial budgets.

Responsibilities
- Manage AI Foundations engineering operations covering hiring, coaching, technical guidance, scheduling, and execution.
- Collaborate with product teams and senior engineers to balance quick innovation with system reliability, security, developer experience, and cost management.
- Supervise vendor relationships and operational readiness on the engineering side.
- Work alongside Security, Legal, and Finance teams regarding artificial intelligence governance and expenditure controls.
- Establish the strategy and multi-year roadmap for the Neutral Foundations pillar of the company AI Tooling Strategy.
- Promote operational excellence for artificial intelligence primitives and services.
- Oversee the delivery of the Large Language Model Gateway and Model Context Protocol Gateway while establishing pathways for model routing and testing.
- Develop the next tier of leadership within the AI Foundations group.
Requirements
- Lead AI Foundations engineering and oversee hiring, coaching, technical direction, prioritization, and delivery
- Own the Neutral Foundations pillar of the AI Tooling Strategy and establish a 2027 strategy and roadmap
- Drive operational excellence of AI primitives and services
- Deliver LLM Gateway and MCP Gateway, and pave the road for model routing and evaluations
- Grow the next rung of leadership on AI Foundations
