Coinbase is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Engineer for its CX Intelligence group, part of the CEE Intelligence team. That team supplies the machine learning and intelligence foundation for the customer engagement ecosystem at Coinbase. Its work includes customer intelligence, evaluation tooling, safety guardrails, decision logic and the routing and classification models that power the Help Center, chat, voice, agent tools and other support runtimes.
This is a senior technical leadership role. The engineer leads the design and rollout of production ML systems, shapes technical strategy across the organization, and works with product and engineering partners to lift resolution quality, the share of work that gets automated, safety and the customer experience. Projects can draw on large language models, deep learning, graph neural nets and classical machine learning. The work also includes coaching engineers, chairing design sessions and setting team norms for tests, monitoring and day-to-day operations.
The position is full-time and remote. Coinbase describes itself as remote-first rather than remote-only, and expects remote staff to gather in person each quarter for sessions it calls surges. The annual base salary range is $218,025 to $256,500 USD, excluding equity and bonus. The posting caps applications at three within any six-month window.
Responsibilities
- Build and ship production ML systems that draw on LLMs, deep learning, graph neural nets and classical ML
- Work with leadership and cross-functional partners to set strategic roadmaps and turn them into quarterly plans with measurable outcomes
- Run major ML initiatives from design to live service, balancing priorities, risks and interdependencies
- Build dependable, secure, scalable machine learning services, evaluation pipelines and data flows in well-tested Python
- Coach engineers and define team norms for design, tests, monitoring and operational excellence
- Chair design sessions that inspect security posture, responsible AI practice, model quality and system structure, with a focus on reliability, scalability and latency
Requirements
- Eight or more years across machine learning and software engineering, including production ML systems or data platforms
- Hands-on use of any of these: LLMs, deep learning, graph neural nets, boosted trees or regression
- Comfort with NLP and information retrieval, plus data mining or statistics at an advanced level
- Strong Python skills for maintainable, well-tested production ML services
- Track record coaching engineers and lifting technical bars, including running design reviews
- Ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Responsible use of generative AI, with human oversight to produce business-ready outputs
