Coinbase is hiring a Senior Software Engineer for certificate management work within its Security Platform Engineering group. The group runs the platforms that handle certificates both publicly and internally, which the posting describes as foundational to all Coinbase systems. The engineer leads development of highly available services that satisfy certificate requirements for internal teams and outside partners, and the posting places heavy weight on engineering judgment and ownership.
The role is technical leadership on critical cryptographic infrastructure. The engineer sets multi-quarter technical strategy, brings clarity to ambiguous requirements for new cryptographic solutions, and takes on high-risk work on secure, resilient crypto protocols that must operate in zero-trust settings. The engineer also serves as the technical reference point and coach for senior engineers, runs thorough code reviews, removes single points of failure and aligns Security, Product and Policy partners behind the plan.
The position is full-time and remote, under the same remote-first arrangement Coinbase uses across the company, with quarterly in-person gatherings. The annual base salary range is $186,065 to $218,900 USD, excluding equity and bonus. Applicants may send no more than three applications in a six-month window.
Responsibilities
- Lead design and execution for vital cryptographic infrastructure
- Set multi-quarter technical strategy for ambiguous requirements around new cryptographic solutions
- Take ownership of risky, ambitious projects that deliver secure, resilient crypto protocols in zero-trust settings
- Coach senior engineers and set a high bar through thorough code reviews
- Remove single points of failure in certificate systems
- Build alignment and commitment from Security, Product and Policy partners
Requirements
- Five-plus years in software engineering, with highly available distributed platforms behind them
- Deep expertise in Public Key Infrastructure and applied cryptography
- Experience running certificate authorities and automating the full certificate life cycle: issue, renew, revoke and distribute trust chains
- Experience safeguarding private keys through hardware security modules or managed cloud key services
- Deep programming experience in systems languages like Golang, Java, C++ or Rust, and comfort where Go dominates the codebase
- Proven record running Tier-0 systems or other mission-critical infrastructure where resilience, security and response speed are non-negotiable
- Experience directing technical strategy, architecture and delivery for large programs that involve complex regulatory demands
