Job Description

Role overview. Grafana Labs is recruiting a full-time Senior Full Stack Engineer for its Real User Monitoring (RUM) initiative, part of Grafana Observability. The job is remote, for candidates in the United States. The initiative captures, stores and queries high-volume user activity from browser and phone clients, so teams can see what real users experience at scale.

Technical work. The team ingests large volumes of telemetry, including session records, events, spans and log lines, and makes them explorable in real time. The solutions integrate with OpenTelemetry and Grafana Cloud. The engineer works across the full path from instrumentation to the query layer and visualization. Work includes columnar storage databases, data modeling, indexing, query optimization and efficient APIs, along with frontend views that help users diagnose performance problems.

Scope. The role covers fullstack features from the frontend through backend services, APIs and storage. It involves working with browser and mobile SDK engineers on dependable ingestion and schema changes, owning projects from design through monitoring, and breaking unclear problems into smaller deliverables. The engineer helps shape the RUM roadmap, supports teammates and takes part in technical design discussions.

Who it suits. The posting asks for five-plus years of fullstack experience with strong frontend skills in TypeScript and React, and backend experience with Go preferred. Candidates should have run distributed systems in production, worked with cloud-native platforms, and handled high-throughput, high-cardinality data. Customer-focused, self-driven people who handle ambiguity and communicate well in a distributed team are a good fit.

Responsibilities

  • Build and evolve fullstack RUM features, starting with the frontend experience and reaching into services, APIs and storage
  • Build systems that take in, keep and search high-cardinality telemetry in column-store databases
  • Develop efficient query layers and APIs for real-time exploration of sessions, traces and events
  • Contribute to frontend applications that help users debug performance and understand user behavior
  • Work on data modeling, indexing and query optimization for low-latency analytics
  • Collaborate with browser and mobile SDK engineers on ingestion and schema changes
  • Own projects from design through deployment, monitoring and iteration

Requirements

  • Five-plus years building fullstack products, with solid frontend fundamentals
  • Frontend experience with TypeScript and React
  • Backend experience, with Go preferred
  • Experience building or running distributed systems in production
  • Familiarity with cloud-native systems such as Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, GCP and Azure
  • Hands-on work with heavy, high-cardinality streams like logs, metrics, traces and events
  • Strong grasp of data modeling, query tuning and performance tradeoffs
  • Experience designing APIs and distributed services, and building data-heavy user interfaces
  • Communication skills for remote, distributed work

Qualifications

  • Background in browser or phone instrumentation, including RUM SDKs
  • Work on iOS or Android apps, or knowledge of mobile performance
  • Contributions to OpenTelemetry or other open-source observability work
  • Experience creating platforms for developers or observability software
  • Knowledge of session replay, sampling methods or user-behavior analysis
