Job Description
Monzo is recruiting a Senior Legal Counsel to support payments work, covering digital assets and newer payment technologies. The role reports to the Director of Legal for Payments and Business Banking and is part of the group known as Legal and Board Governance. The posting gives a salary of around £110,000, plus incentive awards tied to performance and benefits. The header lists London, Cardiff or remote in the UK, while the body says the role is based in London and that other locations are discussed case by case.
The counsel would serve as embedded legal counsel to teams building payments, digital asset and financial technology initiatives. Typical work includes advising product managers and other colleagues on legal and regulatory requirements, spotting legal issues early and weighing their risks, and finding practical answers for unusual business activity. The role also involves working with UK and EU colleagues to identify local rules and apply them to products, and collaborating with risk, financial crime, compliance, fraud and operations teams across the group. The lawyer would help improve how the legal team works, including through technology that streamlines workflows, and would look after supplier and law firm relationships to keep costs under control.
The posting asks for a technically strong lawyer with at least five years in practice since qualifying, including recent work on digital assets, newer fintech products and the shifting regulatory landscape. Applicants should have advised on financial services law, particularly the UK regime for digital assets and newer payment tech. The role calls for someone who can balance commercial and risk considerations, anticipate challenges and keep up with change in consumer finance.
The interview process has three stages: a recruiter call, an initial call and a full loop of technical and behavioural interviews. The posting says the process usually takes three to four weeks and that the company will work around candidates' availability. The role also includes a learning allowance of £1,000 a year and flexible working hours. Relocation help is available for those moving to the UK.
