The Elasticsearch group is currently seeking a Senior Platform Productivity Engineer for the Core and Infrastructure team.
This role focuses on building foundational infrastructure and shared platform features—such as settings, services, scripting via Painless, and plugins—while enhancing observability through logging and telemetry. The position also involves managing Elasticsearch orchestration in serverless environments, establishing CI/CD pipelines, and helping developers deploy products across serverless, cloud, and on-premise deployments.
The role suits a strong individual contributor who possesses robust design abilities, works effectively at low abstraction levels, and communicates technical concepts clearly to diverse collaborators. Candidates must be comfortable driving cross-team projects, automating developer workflows, and utilizing AI tools to debug complex systems, optimize code, and accelerate development.

Responsibilities
- Contribute to impactful engineering projects that evolve core Elasticsearch infrastructure.
- Enhance developer productivity through automation initiatives and agentic app integrations.
- Design and build new horizontally scalable APIs and features within Elasticsearch.
- Resolve challenging performance and concurrency problems by proposing and executing solutions.
- Enhance the operational stability and observability of Elasticsearch cloud environments.
- Engage openly with the Elasticsearch team, users, and supporting open source communities.
- Assist support engineers with diagnosing and resolving complex technical issues.
- Manage operational investigations from start to finish until stability or performance issues are fixed.
Requirements
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD practices and tooling including Argo CD, Buildkite, and GitOps.
- Experience designing APIs and reasoning through technical tradeoffs.
- Proficiency in data structures and algorithms.
- Expertise in core Java, including concurrency constructs, the standard library, and modern language features.
- Familiarity with Java build tools with a strong preference for Gradle.
- Experience working within large codebases containing millions of lines of code.
- Demonstrated history of leading large-scale initiatives across multiple engineering teams.
- Ability to operate autonomously and drive decisions in a distributed team via asynchronous and transparent communication.
Qualifications
- Prior background working on a platform or developer productivity team.
- Familiarity with low-level Java internals such as parallelism, classloaders, and concurrency.
- Knowledge of JDK internals including garbage collection, modules, the Java memory model, caching techniques, and database load.
- Experience utilizing observability and telemetry platforms, specifically OpenTelemetry.
- Familiarity with the Go programming language.
- Working knowledge of containers and Kubernetes.
