The organization is seeking a Senior Platform Productivity Engineer to join the Elasticsearch division in the United Kingdom. This team builds foundational infrastructure and shared features to help engineers develop, maintain, and expand Elasticsearch. The role involves managing common functionality, settings, services, scripting, plugins, and Painless, alongside providing telemetry and logging for system observability. Additional responsibilities include coordinating Elasticsearch orchestration for serverless platforms, managing continuous integration pipelines, and helping developers ship software across on-premise, cloud, and serverless environments. This position suits an experienced individual contributor with strong architectural skills who can handle complex technical challenges, lead cross-team initiatives, and communicate effectively across multiple collaborators.
Responsibilities
- Contribute to significant engineering projects that evolve the core architecture underlying Elasticsearch
- Boost developer efficiency by discovering and building automation mechanisms and integrating agentic apps into workflows
- Design and construct horizontally-scalable APIs and new capabilities within Elasticsearch
- Diagnose and resolve complex technical problems involving concurrency and performance
- Enhance the reliability and telemetry of cloud-based Elasticsearch systems
- Engage publicly with the Elasticsearch team, users, and external open-source projects
- Assist support engineers with challenging technical difficulties
- Manage operational investigations from start to finish until performance or stability complications are fixed
Requirements
- Practical background with GitOps, Argo CD, Buildkite, and other continuous integration systems
- Experience designing APIs and evaluating design tradeoffs
- Strong proficiency in data structures and algorithms
- Core Java expertise including concurrency constructs, the standard library, and recent language features
- Familiarity with Java build tools such as Gradle or Maven, with a strong preference for Gradle
- Background working inside massive codebases containing millions of lines of code
- Demonstrated ability to drive large-scale projects across multiple engineering teams
- History of leveraging AI tools to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and refine code
Qualifications
- Background operating within a platform or developer productivity engineering team
- Familiarity with low-level Java concepts like parallelism, classloaders, and concurrency
- Knowledge of JDK internals such as garbage collection, the Java memory model, modules, caching mechanisms, and database loads
- Familiarity with OpenTelemetry or other telemetry and observability solutions
- Understanding of Go
- Acquaintance with containers and Kubernetes
