Job Description
This is a full-time, hybrid Senior Android Engineer role in London, typically three days a week in the office. The engineer joins the SDUI team, which is building a server-driven UI platform. With it, a screen can be created once and shown on iOS, Android and the web without shipping a new app build, while keeping performance and consistency intact.
The team is responsible for the Android rendering layer and for the backend services that feed it. The engineer designs, builds and develops the Android renderer and the backend code written in Kotlin, Go and Protobuf, so the platform can process complicated, real-time interface changes at scale. This includes leading architecture work and code review to keep the renderer maintainable and sound as more teams build on it.
The role involves working with colleagues who build the iOS and web renderers, plus product and design teams on rollout planning and roadmap decisions. Major initiatives include bringing motion and interaction up to native-app standard and retiring older rendering systems. Mentoring colleagues and contributing to engineering hiring are also part of the job.
The ideal candidate brings more than five years of experience building large Android apps, with strong Kotlin and Jetpack Compose skills. Backend experience in Go, Kotlin and Protobuf is needed, along with a track record of creating or looking after a server-driven or declarative interface system. Familiarity with Litho or other DSL-driven rendering tools, Figma-to-code tools, design-token systems or mobile accessibility would be a bonus. A product mindset and a commitment to readable, well-tested code are expected.
Responsibilities
- Design, build and evolve the Android renderer for SDUI, plus the backend services feeding it.
- Lead architecture improvements and code reviews for the renderer.
- Coordinate rollouts and platform decisions with iOS, web, product and design colleagues.
- Own large initiatives from design through delivery, including motion quality and retiring legacy rendering.
- Mentor colleagues and take part in engineering hiring.
Requirements
- Over five years building large-scale Android apps.
- Strong working command of Kotlin plus Jetpack Compose.
- Server-side work in Go, Kotlin and Protobuf.
- Track record of creating or looking after a server-driven or declarative interface system.
- Record of owning technical delivery in mixed-discipline teams.
- Comfortable collaborating over time zones with iOS, web, backend and product peers.
- Pride in readable, well-designed and well-tested mobile code.
