Job Description

Motive is recruiting a Senior or Staff Product Manager for Connected Devices, focused on the Equipment Monitoring line. The product leader would own the hardware and firmware plan for field devices that track trailers, refrigerated units, heavy machinery, hand tools and cargo. Hardware in scope includes the Asset Gateway unit, Motive Beacon tag and Environmental Sensor, backed by partner networks and equipment-maker integrations.

The scope runs across a device's whole life. Responsibilities run from shaping new products and carrying them from prototype to volume, to improving how deployed units hold up on battery, link quality and dependability. Firmware priorities for deployed units, device partnerships and launch readiness with go-to-market teams also fall to this person. The manager would work as a peer of the electrical, firmware, mechanical, quality, manufacturing, procurement and program management teams. Once information leaves the hardware, the cloud product team takes over, so the manager would coordinate closely with them on telemetry and device management.

Candidates should have six or more years of product management, including connected hardware carried through to mass production. Ownership of a full hardware program that reached material volume is expected, and the listing names 100,000 units as the ideal scale. The posting asks for practical knowledge of battery-powered connected systems, over-the-air firmware programs and field reliability, plus a bachelor's degree in an engineering or technical discipline or equivalent hands-on experience. The listing names no city, is marked on-site, and gives a United States pay range of $180,000 to $248,000 USD.

Responsibilities

  • Chart the hardware and firmware direction for gateways, beacons, sensors and power add-ons
  • Drive new hardware launches from defining the problem and sourcing parts, through validation builds, regulatory approval, ramp-up and post-launch fixes
  • Monitor failure and return rates, real-world battery performance, connectivity and installation success
  • Rank firmware work such as power savings, over-the-air rollouts, diagnostics and security
  • Make product calls for partner and mesh location networks
  • Write product requirements and specs, and keep engineering, quality and supply groups aligned at each gate
  • Coordinate telemetry, provisioning and device management agreements with cloud and mobile teams

Requirements

  • Six-plus years as a product manager, including IoT, telematics or connected hardware carried into volume production
  • A full hardware launch that reached significant volume, ideally 100,000 units or more
  • Technical fluency in microcontrollers, power budgets, RF and antennas, satellite positioning, cellular and Bluetooth Low Energy
  • Experience owning firmware plans that include over-the-air updates, provisioning and device security
  • Hands-on record of diagnosing and fixing reliability problems in deployed products
  • Comfort using device telemetry and field performance figures to set priorities
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or technical field, or comparable hands-on experience

Qualifications

  • Launch history with cellular, battery-powered trackers that have multi-year battery targets
  • Background in telematics, fleet tech, construction tech, cold chain or heavy equipment
  • Experience running over-the-air programs at scale, with fleet health checks and rollback plans
  • Familiarity with CAN, OBD-II, J1939 and AEMP 2.0
  • Experience with overseas contract manufacturers and sourcing across several regions

Core Skills

Benefits

  • Medical, pharmacy, vision and dental coverage
  • Paid vacation and paid sick leave
  • Disability protection, both short-term and long-term
  • Life insurance
  • 401(k) contribution
  • Benefit eligibility rules apply
