Job Description

Canonical is seeking a Software Engineer for its Solutions Engineering team, which develops open source automation for infrastructure operations. Python tools built by the group make it simpler for anyone running Ubuntu to operate their systems. The group also draws on its own experience operating private OpenStack and Kubernetes environments on behalf of clients, feeding those lessons back into Canonical's infrastructure-as-code products.

Most of the job is Python development aimed at DevOps workflows. Quality is judged on design, documentation, tests and performance. Engineers may help shape monitoring and alerting systems and work across the Linux stack, from the kernel and networking to storage and virtualisation. The team spans many countries, so working well across time zones is part of the job.

The post suits a passionate Python developer who wants reliable, timely software and understands why operations need to be dependable in an agile setting. Sound knowledge of cloud computing, practical Linux and networking experience, and a habit of continual learning are expected. Golang skills and a computer science degree are welcome extras. Engineers are also expected to mentor colleagues and help build a collaborative culture. Up to a tenth of working time may be spent travelling to internal and external events.

Canonical is a global software company that publishes Ubuntu and works with public cloud and chip vendors. Its distributed workforce numbers more than 1,000 people across over 70 countries.
