Job Description
Pinterest operates a digital platform where global users discover fresh concepts, visualize ideas, and plan projects. Artificial intelligence acts as a core partner across the company, fueling critical features such as recommendations, advertising, visual search, notifications, and trust operations. The AI Platform team builds foundational technology utilized by hundreds of machine learning practitioners. In this role, the Sr. Staff Software Engineer will lead the evolution of Pinterest's centralized evaluation framework for generative AI and machine learning workloads, collaborating closely with research, product, and safety divisions to drive system adoption and product reliability.
Responsibilities
- Partner with technical leadership to identify modernization needs and scale the roadmap for a unified evaluation architecture
- Define cross-functional technical strategies and encourage broad company-wide adoption of shared assessment tools
- Make long-term architectural decisions that enhance user experience and platform reliability
- Establish evaluation frameworks combining automated metrics, expert judgment, human feedback, safety protocols, and business goals
- Lead complex initiatives across teams to resolve technical risks and deliver measurable impact
Requirements
- Three or more years of hands-on background building and operating evaluation systems for generative AI and complex machine learning setups
- Proficiency in Python alongside a strong foundation in distributed systems concepts
- Extensive familiarity with evaluation libraries and frameworks for generative AI and recommender systems
- Five or more years of experience constructing scalable platforms for distributed experimentation, data and model versioning, orchestration, observability, and production monitoring
- Thorough understanding of generative AI risks, including bias, security, privacy, robustness, and automated signal limitations
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
