Job Description
Role overview. Grafana Labs is recruiting a Staff Backend Engineer for a new Analytics team. The role is remote and open to candidates in the United States or Canada, but the posting says Quebec residents cannot apply. The team is early-stage and sits within a skunkworks effort to extend observability across the whole company.
Product direction. The team is building an AI-first data intelligence platform that governs how agents access company context. The aim is to retrieve relevant datasets, definitions, data origin, quality indicators and institutional know-how, so agents can act without each builder maintaining its own context files. The first production services will cover context intake, indexing, retrieval orchestration, APIs, source setup and administration.
Scope. The engineer helps define a multi-tenant service foundation, covering isolation between tenants, usage metering, limits and audit trails. The role also builds endpoints that let AI agents, MCP integrations, command-line tools and internal apps pull context along with provenance, confidence and caution flags. The engineer equips services with telemetry, alerting and dashboards, and helps decide architecture, storage, interface contracts and deployment patterns.
Who it suits. The posting describes a high-autonomy team and asks for someone comfortable with ambiguity who can make pragmatic architecture calls and take a system from internal use to production-grade SaaS. Candidates should have shipped software that users rely on, bring experience with LLMs and GenAI applications, and know cloud environments such as AWS, GCP or Azure. Agent frameworks and data platforms are nice-to-haves.
Responsibilities
- Build, test and run the initial services for context intake, indexing, retrieval, APIs, source setup and admin
- Co-design a multi-tenant architecture with separation between customers, metering, limits and audit logs
- Develop endpoints so agents, MCP integrations, command-line tools and internal apps can pull context and warnings
- Balance rapid prototyping against lasting dependability as the product moves to production
- Equip services with telemetry, alerting and dashboards
- Help set service boundaries, storage options, interface contracts and rollout habits for a brand-new product line
Requirements
- Substantial experience shipping customer-facing systems that hold up in production
- Hands-on time with large language models, prompt design and GenAI-driven apps
- History of getting software into production and seeing real users rely on it
- Experience with cloud-native environments such as AWS, GCP or Azure
- Comfort using telemetry to diagnose how systems behave
- Willing to launch prototypes, gather input and refine quickly
- Ability to define scope where requirements are loosely defined
Qualifications
- Exposure to agent frameworks or multi-agent pipelines
- Background as an analyst or on platforms like Looker, Tableau, Power BI, Snowflake or Databricks
- Have built data engineering tooling
Core Skills
Benefits
- Equity, with bonus where applicable
