Job Description
Role overview. Grafana Labs is recruiting a full-time Staff Backend Engineer for the Grafana Enterprise team. The job is remote, for candidates in the United States and Canada. Grafana Enterprise is a self-operated platform for large-scale operators with strict security and compliance demands, and its features are also part of Grafana Cloud.
Team and customers. The team works across Grafana Labs and directly with outside customers, including large cloud providers and multinational companies. Its focus is hardening, flexibility, tenant separation and cross-system compatibility. Most meetings fall in the afternoon UTC window, and the team adjusts to engineers' schedules. The backend is written in Go, and engineers also take part in open-source projects.
Scope. The engineer designs and leads server-side components, distributed platforms and enterprise capabilities, and drives projects from ideation to production. The role covers scalable, dependable, secure multi-tenant operation, and includes a weekday 12-hour on-call rotation and a separate weekend 24-hour rotation. It also means helping hire and grow engineers, designing APIs used by enterprise operators, and advising on customer needs throughout development.
Who it suits. The posting asks for deep experience building production services and running them at scale, with a firm grasp of distributed systems fundamentals. Candidates should communicate openly, keep their commitments, and start from customer needs when making decisions. Experience with observability tooling, database schema design and continuous delivery is expected. TypeScript and React work, the LGTM stack and large-scale build infrastructure are nice-to-haves.
Responsibilities
- Design and build Go-based distributed backend services that prioritize correctness, visibility and speed
- Create interfaces and service agreements relied on by large enterprise operators and cloud vendors
- Shape features with Product and UX and partner with frontend engineers on end-to-end delivery
- Drive scalability and reliability improvements for regulated, high-availability environments
- Work with major enterprise clients and cloud vendors to turn their needs into engineering plans
- Take part in weekday and weekend on-call rotations and own the operational health of the platform
- Help hire and develop engineers and promote better engineering and operational practices
Requirements
- Extensive background building production services, from first idea through to running them at scale
- Strong distributed systems fundamentals, including replication, consistency, partitioning and fault tolerance
- Experience designing and operating high-traffic, multi-tenant or highly available systems
- Track record creating and using gRPC or protobuf interfaces
- Solid database know-how with PostgreSQL or MySQL: table design, query speed and migrations
- Experience running continuous delivery pipelines and build systems at large organizations
- Comfort with Kubernetes and containerized deployments, including stateful and multi-tenant workloads
- Familiarity with OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, structured logs and tracing across services
- Familiarity with dependency injection patterns and testable service architecture
Qualifications
- Some TypeScript and React work for frontend features
- Experience with Grafana's LGTM-based stack, including Loki, Mimir, Tempo, Pyroscope and Alloy
- Earlier roles at major cloud platforms, infrastructure hosts or global enterprises with strict uptime terms
- Work on big build systems, artifact stores or sealed build tools such as Bazel
