Job Description
Role overview. Grafana Labs is recruiting a full-time Staff Backend Engineer for the Mimir Query squad inside its Databases team. The role is remote, for candidates in USA time zones. The Databases team runs Mimir, Loki, Tempo and Pyroscope as managed services inside Grafana Cloud, and also as on-premise editions under Grafana Enterprise.
Team context. These databases are multi-tenant distributed systems written in Go and run at scale on Kubernetes across AWS, GCP and Azure. The Mimir squad has three sub-teams covering ingestion, storage and queries. Together they maintain the open source Mimir project and run Grafana Cloud Metrics. Scope. The engineer owns critical systems from design through daily operation, including their reliability, speed and uptime. Work includes sharing in the global on-call coverage, shepherding automated releases, reviewing design documents and pull requests, contributing to other open source projects, and carrying projects from first idea to customer use.
Who it suits. The posting looks for a self-starter with good time management, a customer focus and a pragmatic style that ships working increments and learns from them. Working proficiency in one or more languages is expected, with Go preferred and Python, C, C++ or Rust considered similar. Candidates should have built cloud or systems software, know when to reach for metrics, logs or traces, and be comfortable with microservices and distributed systems.
