Job Description
Role overview. Grafana Labs is recruiting a full-time, fully remote Staff Product Manager who will own the OpenTelemetry experience. The posting says it is considering candidates in the US Eastern time zone. The role covers the full path that takes people and coding agents from instrumenting a workload to sending healthy OpenTelemetry data into Grafana Cloud.
Scope. The product manager defines one coherent experience across three ways of instrumenting: OpenTelemetry SDKs, automatic approaches like Beyla and SDK injection, and client-side OpenTelemetry Collectors. The work covers setup, configuration and authentication, troubleshooting of missing or malformed telemetry, and validation signals that show whether data is healthy and useful. The manager also owns the handoff from incoming telemetry to Grafana Cloud solutions like Application Observability and Kubernetes Monitoring.
Agent-first design. Coding agents are expected to take on more and more of the instrumentation work, so options, configuration rules, errors and validation results need to be structured for both people and machines. The manager is also expected to use AI tools routinely for research synthesis, prototyping and testing agent-led setup journeys.
Who it suits. The posting describes a horizontal Staff-level leader with five or more years in product management for developer tools, observability, infrastructure or data platforms. The person should lead strategy across several engineering teams without formal authority over them, and bring working knowledge of OpenTelemetry, including SDKs, OTLP, Collector pipelines and semantic conventions. The role is accountable for the overall customer experience and its success measures.
Responsibilities
- Chart the direction and multi-product plan for taking a bare workload to useful telemetry in Grafana Cloud
- Design clear, opinionated paths that help users pick and set up SDK, automatic or Collector-based instrumentation
- Tackle the biggest reasons setups fail or get abandoned, and the causes of poor-quality data
- Agree shared principles, priorities and success measures with product and engineering groups
- Rely on research and usage data to rank investments and track completion rates and time to first useful data
- Partner with Grafana Cloud solution teams to move users from ingestion to product activation
- Shape how the OpenTelemetry offering is positioned, working with marketing and sales groups
- Speak for the company and its customers in OpenTelemetry community forums
Requirements
- Five or more years in product roles in developer tooling, observability, infrastructure or data platforms, or similar B2B work
- Strategy and delivery leadership across several engineering groups without formal authority over them
- Practical grasp of OpenTelemetry: SDKs, OTLP, Collector pipelines and semantic conventions
- Experience with instrumentation systems, agents, telemetry collectors or configuration products
- Knowledge of running software on Kubernetes, virtual machines and public clouds
- Skill at simplifying complicated setup, configuration and debugging processes into easy product flows
- History of relying on user research and usage data to get teams aligned and show results
- Excellent written and verbal communication for technical and non-technical audiences in a remote, global organization
Qualifications
- Involvement in OpenTelemetry or other open-source observability projects, or building products on them
- Work with eBPF-based or runtime instrumentation, including automatic approaches
- Hands-on time as a site reliability engineer, platform engineer, developer or observability specialist
- Built self-serve onboarding, config validation or telemetry health features used at large scale
