Job Description
Samsara is a publicly traded firm (NYSE: IOT) offering a connected operations cloud that uses Internet of Things data to make physically intensive work safer and more efficient. Its customers come from agriculture, construction, field service, transport and manufacturing. Candidates living in the US can apply to this remote Staff Software Engineer role.
The job sits in the Maps group, which builds the geospatial foundation used throughout Samsara. The team gathers, enriches and publishes map information such as road networks, places of interest, street addresses, boundary shapes and customer-specific layers. Reliable, accurate and simple-to-use mapping services allow other product groups to ship location-aware features faster.
The Staff Engineer shapes the platform's technical direction. The work covers ingestion pipelines and processing jobs, data models and serving layers, map matching and route calculation, and APIs that other teams can reuse. The role also merges fragmented, team-specific geo tools into common services, helps scale storage and compute for real-time features, and supports tooling that lets customers pull the map views they need.
Because the team is small, the owner of these systems carries wide responsibility. The engineer raises quality through code review, design discussions and mentoring, joins leaders in weighing technical bets, and may speak externally through talks, open-source contributions and community activity.
Responsibilities
- Set the direction of the Maps platform's technical roadmap
- Develop geo systems and connectors that underpin key functionality in nearly all Samsara offerings
- Scale storage, query and compute capacity to meet real-time demand
- Merge team-specific geospatial code into shared, platform-wide services
- Create tooling that lets customers pick the data and visualizations they want themselves
- Raise engineering standards through reviews, design discussions and coaching
- Partner with engineering leaders on priorities and candid tradeoffs
- Speak for the company at talks and in open-source and mapping communities, when appropriate
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computing or engineering, or equivalent practical experience
- Eight or more years writing software, two or more of them in architecture or technical lead positions
- Solid programming and design foundations
- Four or more years on large distributed systems
- Four or more years leading technical efforts that cut across several teams
- Able to work through ambiguity and bring people together without formal authority
Qualifications
- Practical grounding in GIS and spatial analysis, using tools like PostGIS, spatial query languages, GeoPandas, Shapely, QGIS and validation of geodata
- Knowledge of GeoParquet, OpenStreetMap and OSM PBF, including ingesting, transforming, validating or serving those datasets
Core Skills
Benefits
- Compensation above market, mixing base pay, variable pay and equity where eligible
- Starting equity grant in RSUs, free of a vesting cliff, plus potential refreshers tied to performance
- Flexible remote model with optional offices
- Development stipend for professional growth
