Robinhood is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join its Exchange Platform team within the Bitstamp ecosystem. Robinhood operates as a financial platform with a mission to democratize finance, while Bitstamp functions as a regulated cryptocurrency exchange. In this role, the engineer will define the technical vision, architectural roadmap, and engineering standards for platform modernization strategies.
This position is based out of the London office, requiring in-person attendance for a minimum of three days per week. The role suits a bold problem-solver with extensive backend engineering experience who can design cloud infrastructure for low-latency services, direct distributed systems integrations, and eliminate operational toil. Responsibilities also include participating in an on-call rotation to maintain 24/7 platform integrity, mentoring senior engineers, and leading architectural design reviews.
The successful candidate will possess a background in backend and distributed systems engineering in high-scale settings, along with expertise in containerization and enterprise-scale cloud services. Responsibilities
- Define and drive long-term architectural vision for high-availability, low-latency cloud platforms
- Spearhead multi-quarter modernization initiatives and transition foundational services to containerized cloud environments
- Lead technical alignment and distributed architecture bridging Bitstamp exchange backend with Robinhood global infrastructure
- Architect self-healing systems and intelligent automation to minimize operational load
- Take end-to-end accountability for complex technical initiatives and trade-offs
- Mentor and elevate senior engineers and lead architectural design reviews
- Act as a senior escalation point for high-severity incidents and lead post-mortems
Requirements
- Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in backend and distributed systems engineering
- Track record of operating as a technical lead or Staff-level engineer in high-scale environments
- Advanced architectural expertise with containerization and orchestration tools like Docker and Kubernetes
- Experience with enterprise-scale AWS cloud services including EC2, ECS/EKS, Aurora, and DynamoDB
- Understanding of high-concurrency, low-latency backend architectures and event-driven systems
- Participation in an on-call rotation to support business needs
- In-person office attendance in London at least 3 days per week
