Job Description
Motive is recruiting a Telematics Coverage Engineer to extend the range and detail of the vehicle data its platform gathers from on-highway and off-highway machines. The full-time, on-site post is in the United Kingdom. The engineer reviews OEM telematics products, inspects vehicle network activity and devises practical ways to collect and decode the data behind new features and customer analytics.
Projects move from desk research to field validation. Using wiring schematics, body builder documentation and manufacturer manuals, the engineer works out how to tap into a vehicle and reach its data, then applies live debugging, log review, data scraping, reverse engineering and bespoke scripts to widen coverage. Findings go to engineering and product teams, and the role involves visiting customer sites to verify solutions on real vehicles while collaborating with colleagues worldwide.
The ideal hire has four-plus years working with automotive network traffic or telematics platforms and direct experience with vehicle communication buses. Competence in C, C++ or Python, use of multimeters, oscilloscopes and diagnostic scan tools, and knowledge of automotive diagnostics such as OBD-II and UDS are expected. The listing names no salary and no benefits.
Responsibilities
- Study network signals, manufacturer data and field logs to locate useful telemetry fields
- Read wiring schematics, body builder guides and manufacturer documentation to plan connections and data access
- Plug into vehicle networks, record and analyse logs, and write up findings for colleagues
- Apply live debugging, scraping, reverse engineering and custom scripting to extend coverage
- Advise on new telematics features and on better interpretation of vehicle data
- Visit customer sites to test coverage on real vehicles
- Lead coverage projects alongside global, cross-functional teams
Requirements
- Four-plus years analysing automotive network traffic or operating telematics systems
- Practical history connecting to vehicles and their communication buses
- Fluency in C, C++, Python or a comparable programming language
- Comfort with hardware test gear such as multimeters, oscilloscopes and scan tools
- Familiarity with reverse-engineering software and interfaces such as Vehicle Spy, PCAN or SavvyCAN
- Working understanding of vehicle diagnostics standards, including OBD-II and UDS
Qualifications
- A bachelor-level or higher qualification in electrical, software or automotive engineering, or a similar field
